Results from a CCPI study on family access to early care and education are now available in a pair of related research briefs, available here and here. The briefs present results from a survey of families and a set of family focus groups, all focused on families’ child care usage, their child care preferences, and the gaps between the care they would prefer to use and what they actually use due to constraints. The research focused on families who may face particular access barriers, including Spanish speakers, new immigrants and refugees speaking languages other than Spanish, and indigenous families. Major efforts in New Mexico are underway to expand access to care, and this study suggests they are sorely needed. Families in the study broadly reported that their care use fell short of their needs in terms of factors such as affordability, hours of care available, and care that affirmed their home cultures and languages.
New Mexico families need more care that is affordable, offers non-traditional hours and affirms home cultures
