New research out this week in Early Childhood Research Quarterly elevates the voices of New Mexico families describing their child care hopes and preferences, the barriers they face in accessing child care, and the consequences of those barriers for their families’ stability. The research is based on focus groups with New Mexicans from Tribal communities, Spanish speakers, Asian immigrant families, and refugee families. Key findings suggest that even in New Mexico’s expansive child care policy environment, families in these groups often struggled to find high-quality care that affirmed their cultural traditions and home languages.
